What is the Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium is a Government initiative providing additional funding for schools in England to help raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils of all abilities and to close the gaps between them and their peers. Research shows that students from disadvantaged backgrounds underachieve compared to their non-disadvantaged peers. The funding is aimed at supporting these students in reaching their potential.
Schools receive the funding for each pupil registered as eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years. A premium has also been introduced for children who are looked after by the Local Authority and whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces. This service premium is designed to address the emotional and social well-being of these pupils.
Principles of Pupil Premium Funding at Calderstones
We strive to ensure that teaching and learning and all related educational opportunities meet the needs of all of the pupils at the school.
We ensure that appropriate provision is made for pupils who belong to vulnerable groups. This includes ensuring that the needs of socially disadvantaged pupils are adequately assessed and addressed.
All of our work through the use of Pupil Premium funding will be aimed at improving opportunities and accelerating progress for these pupils. This may however, include initiatives which simultaneously have a positive impact on pupils who are not eligible for the funding. An example of this may include the reduction in class sizes in some core subjects.
At Calderstones, we are determined to diminish the gap in achievement between those students who may be disadvantaged and those who are not. We are fully aware of the enormity and complexity of this undertaking but we will work tirelessly and relentlessly in school to support staff and students in tackling this head-on. All members of staff and governors accept responsibility for those students recognised as disadvantaged and are committed to meeting their pastoral, social and academic needs.
