The Calderstones Student Leadership Project is thriving across the whole school community. It has truly inspired young minds and provided pupils with the unique opportunity for ‘pupil voice’ to be heard within the school, across the city and to the rest of the country and the opportunity to make a difference. The experiences these pupils have gained from their leadership role are already proving to be invaluable.
Pupils for the student leadership team are rewarded with their role and ‘student leadership tie’ in a rewards assembly. The enrolment process began with pupils applying for each position, delivering speeches and going through the election process and formal interviews. The rewards ceremony is a high profile annual event.
The Student Leadership project’s key success is due to the fact that it enables all students to ‘have a voice’ and provides the opportunity for them to liaise with the entire school community and beyond. It develops their ability to engage their voice and views in their own communities and makes them aware of their rights to have say in how their country functions.
Evidence shows that pupils involved enjoy enhanced self-esteem and motivation, gain important social and organisation skills and become familiar with group and democratic processes. Their involvement in decision making has led to better relationships, more relevant and effective policies, as well as better learning. All students feel valued and happy that their thoughts are listened to and respected. Calderstones Student Leadership team has become the heart of the school community.
The Student Leadership Team works on a pyramid type structure so that all students in the school have the opportunity to contribute. It is rather like a shadow staff leadership team and is made up of the following positions:
